Organizational Politics in TV or Movies
There are quite a bit of movies and TV shows that show good examples of concepts we learned this week. Though not an example of politics in the office, I believe the HBO show, Game of Thrones is a show that is full of examples and concepts of politicking. It is a fictional show between characters in pursuit of the “Iron Throne” or the power to rule the seven kingdoms. I apologize for the spoilers if you have not seen the show, but below is the link to the show that explains the Game of Thrones politics (Totally Vexed, 2016).
The definition of political behavior are those activities that are not required as part of one’s formal role in the organization, but that influence, or attempt to influence, the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within the organization (Robbins, 1997). In the show, you will often see characters camouflaging their self-interest, ruling the seven kingdoms, by acting like their behaviors is for the good of the kingdom and their people. Characters are also seen trying to develop the right image of the leader or ruler that the people want. There are also plenty of examples of families building alliances in order to gain an advantage against their enemies.
